Amazon KDP Royalties in India: Why 70 Percent Is Not 70 Percent

The 70 percent royalty on Amazon is not 70 percent. This is not a complaint about Amazon. It is what Amazon’s own pages say, and it is worth reading them before you price your book.

Here is what actually applies on Amazon.in.

The 70 percent option requires exclusivity

To take the 70 percent royalty on Amazon.in you must enrol the title in KDP Select. KDP’s list price requirements page states it directly: for sales to customers in Brazil, Japan, Mexico and India, digital books must also be enrolled in KDP Select to be eligible for the 70 percent royalty option.

KDP Select means digital exclusivity. Your ebook cannot be sold anywhere else while enrolled. The term runs 90 days at a time and renews automatically unless you turn that off.

For most first-time authors that is a fair trade. It is still a trade, and it is one many people make without knowing they made it.

The 70 percent band has a ceiling

On Amazon.in, the 70 percent rate applies only to list prices between Rs 99 and Rs 599. That range is on the same KDP page.

Price your ebook at Rs 699 and you do not earn 70 percent of a bigger number. You drop to the 35 percent band. A price increase of Rs 100 can cut your per-copy earnings roughly in half.

This catches authors who reason about price the way they would about a physical product, where charging more earns more. On the 70 percent option it does not work that way at the top of the band. There is a cliff, and it is at Rs 599.

Delivery costs come off before your royalty

KDP confirms that delivery costs still apply to the 70 percent royalty option. That charge is based on the size of your file, and it is deducted before your royalty is calculated, not after.

The practical consequence is that a heavy file quietly costs you money on every single sale. Uncompressed images are the usual culprit. A picture book, a photography title, or a text with dozens of full-page illustrations carries a permanent deduction that a plain-text novel does not.

If your book has images, compressing them properly is not a cosmetic step. It is a margin decision, and it is one of the few in publishing that pays you back on every copy for the life of the title.

Tax sits on top of all of it

Royalties from Amazon.in carry a withholding deduction before the money reaches you, and Indian tax then applies to what arrives. This is worth confirming against your own tax position rather than a rule of thumb, because it depends on the details you have filed with Amazon.

The point for planning is simply that the number on the royalty report is not the number that lands in your account, and neither is the number you keep after filing.

What that adds up to

Take a Rs 299 ebook, which sits comfortably inside the 70 percent band.

You start at 70 percent. Delivery cost comes off first, based on file size. What remains is your royalty. Withholding applies to that. Indian tax applies to what is left.

The headline said 70 percent. Depending on your file size, the figure before tax is meaningfully lower, and the figure you actually keep is lower again.

None of this makes KDP a bad choice. For a lot of authors it is the right one. It makes KDP a choice worth making with the actual numbers rather than the headline percentage.

Three things to check before you set a price

Your file size. Open the finished ebook file and look at the megabytes. That number is a permanent deduction on every sale.

Your price against Rs 599. If you are pricing near the top of the band, model both sides of the cliff before deciding. Rs 599 at 70 percent and Rs 699 at 35 percent are not close.

Whether exclusivity suits you. If you have any intention of selling the ebook elsewhere, KDP Select removes that option for 90 days at a time, and with it the 70 percent rate on Amazon.in.

Work out what you earn per copy before you publish, not after the first royalty statement arrives and surprises you.
